For this
research, I’ve been fortunate enough to partner with an incredible citizen science
program called COASST (Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team) based out
of the University of Washington in Seattle. Established in 1998 by Dr. Julia
Parrish of the University of Washington, COASST is an expansive citizen science
network focused on the health of marine ecosystems by monitoring sea and shorebird
populations. COASST is well-established with strong records of consistent
program management and success, providing a fitting opportunity to explore
‘sense of place’ and meaning-making among citizen science participants. With
over 800 participants in monitoring and data collection at hundreds of beaches
in four states (WA, CA, OR, AK), the program is providing invaluable knowledge with regards to baseline coastal bird population data and health. My first stop on my
trip was at the COASST office in Seattle. Spending a day in the office was a
treat, reminding me of the level of work and commitment it takes to manage such
a successful program. Julia, Jane, Liz, and Charlie, as well as the many
dedicated student interns are all rocks stars! COASST volunteers are in good
hands with this crew!
Visiting
with the COASST team was a great way to get excited about my trip and connect
with the folks that make it all happen.
